Having just completed a highly successful Tour of Iceland, The Faroes and Norway, Joyce is gearing up again for 2007 tours!
A Trip for Knitters & Friends to England &
France - May 2007
Come join us as we begin our visit to south-western England with a stay
in Cornwall--an opportunity to travel in this picturesque area with its
unforgettable scenery and interesting history.
Among our memorable stops:
- the Cornish Heritage Museum of Smuggling &
Fishing in Polperro, where there are a number of references to Cornish
knitting and the Guernsey sweaters;
- experience the beauty of the Lost Gardens of
Heligan, voted “The Nation’s Favourite Garden” by listeners to the BBC
program, ‘Gardeners’ World’;
- scenic St. Ives and the site of the Tate St. Ives
Gallery and home to many celebrated artists and the pottery studio of
the late Bernard Leach.
After crossing the English Channel to Normandy,
we’ll tour the Normandy Beaches with a Blue Badge Guide; view the
incredible Bayeux Tapestry, a masterpiece of embroidery on linen,
created in the 11th Century which tells the story of the conquest of
England by William the Conqueror in 1066.
Before leaving Normandy, we’ll also go to Caen,
now a busy cultural and commercial centre, with an interesting history,
both medieval and current. Caen was the site of heavy bombing during World
War II but has been completely restored.
The next high point of our itinerary is a barge trip, largely
following the Seine River and its tributaries. This will be a
special cruise with ample time to knit and enjoy the cuisine and wines of
the areas we’ll pass through. Among our guided visits will be Giverny,
to see:
- the house and gardens of Claude Monet, the most
famous of the Impressionist Painters;
- La Petite Malmaison, home of Josephine, the first
wife of Napoleon 1st;
- Chateau Chantilly with its extensive painting
collection and beautiful grounds.
- We’ll glide through Paris on a memorable night
cruise.
Our tour ends with a two-night stop in Paris. We’ll
stay in a small hotel on the interesting Left Bank, so you’ll be
within easy walking distance of the Louvre and the many famous
sites of this fascinating city.
Watch for detailed itinerary and prices coming soon.
